Parents are more likely than ever to speak openly and honestly about the ups and downs of parent life.  Not only are we increasingly inclined to wear our hearts on our sleeves, the current slogan t-shirt trend suggests that we’re happy to wear our sentiments on our clothing too. It’s safe to say that mama merch is having quite the moment.

Here are some of my ultimate faves; female-led brands selling fun, bold clothing and accessories for parents, with ethical retail values at the heart of their businesses. Whether you’re after a quirky gift for a pal or something fun and inspiring for yourself, this list of top mama merchants has you covered.

1. The Fmly Store Mama Merch

Molly Gunn, the UK blogger behind Selfish Mother, started this family-centric, ethical clothing company in a bid to raise funds for women affected by war. It has spiralled into a thriving online business and last year she opened her first bricks-and-mortar store in Somerset.

This guide wouldn’t be complete without the cult ‘Mother’ tee, worn by Instamums the length and breadth of the UK. Along with clever statement sweaters and t-shirts for women, The Fmly Store also stocks kidswear and dad gear. These guys donate a generous hunk of the profits to a plethora of charities they feel strongly about. Feel good factor guaranteed. Sure, it’d be rude not to, really.

If you don’t follow Muthahood‘s Gemma on Instagram then you should. If you don’t use Instagram then you should start using it just so you can start following Gemma. Genuine, effortlessly funny and oh-so-likable, she’ll make you feel good about life in the same way your best mate does.

Another blogger-turned-business woman, her range of clothing and accessories aims to celebrate the empowerment of motherhood. Her affordable pieces ooze fun, personality and #stronggirlvibes.  Sustainable, climate-neutral business is very important to Gemma and her clothing range is manufactured in line with Fair Wear standards.

Items from their clever, colourful range are instantly recognisable and have the catchiest of captions. One of everything, please! 4. Black & Beech Mama Merch

Fashion Design lecturer Stacey is the Irish (huzzah!) founder of Black & Beech, a mama merch brand with strong feminist convictions. Her statement jewellery, prints, pins and tees have been making timely waves on social media. Her pieces are honest, inspiring and relatable, a bit like Cardiff-based Stacey herself.

The mum of one originally started out making scandi-inspired teething jewellery but her more recent tongue-in-cheek pieces – like the ‘Coffee & Calpol’ pins and necklaces – have mothers talking. Black & Beech donates to a number of charities including Mankind, Plan International, Tommy’s and London Irish Abortion Rights Campaign. Clothing is organic cotton, climate neutral and fair trade. She also stocks a thoughtful selection of care packages for fellow parents in the trenches. Mama Merch Black & Beech

Ren & Gem is the brainchild of two Belfast-based sisters and mothers who craved comfortable, affordable, ‘throw on’ loungewear that showed who they were – proud mamas. When they couldn’t find the products they wanted, they decided to create the gear themselves, clever things.

Their screen printed sweatshirts and tees are made from 100% organic cotton and produced ethically in conjunction with the Fair to Wear Foundation.

Mum of two girls, Becky stocks an edgy range of t-shirts, sweaters and accessories with strong messages of female empowerment.  She also sells some gorgeous kids’ slogan tops including ‘Girls Make the World Go Round’ and ‘I am Strong, I am Brave, I am Smart’. Fabulous.
